Background

A newly created advisory body for the FSIN Justice Secretariat, the Youth Council for Just Relations (YCJR) was designed to give a voice to the urban and rural youth at First Nation forums.

Objectives

The YCJR develops materials for youth in areas of:

  • Addictions (specifically crystal methamphetamine)
  • Gang awareness/prevention/support
  • Youth Transitions (reintegration from youth detention facilities and from the gang lifestyle)

Composition

The FSIN Youth Council for Just Relations is comprised of various First Nation youth with differing cultural and academic backgrounds and is representative of the four directions. Membership consists of individuals classified as:

Members: Individuals who represent the various Saskatchewan First Nations, Tribal/Grand Councils and Independent First Nations.

Technical Advisors: Experts in the areas of addictions, gangs and reintegration who act in an advisory or technical support role for the YCJR.

YCJR Membership Process:

  • Official letter of endorsement from the youth’s respective Chief;
  • Recommendation from the respective Chief to his/her Grand/Tribal Council for youth appointment to the YCJR; and
  • FSIN Justice Secretariat seeks representation from Grand/Tribal Council as required and according to the Indian Justice Commission representation process.
