Background
The Corrections
Office was established in 1995 and has produced
-
The
First Nations Corrections Framework Document (1997), a compilation
of consultations with First Nations and other organizations
on corrections issues.
-
The Strategic Plan for First Nations Corrections (1999-2000),
a description of resource needs, the objectives of each one,
and complementary, supportive strategies required of both
the FSIN and governmental organizations.
-
The
First Nation Strategy for Successful Reintegration (2005),
a work plan intended to break the cycle of recidivism. This
strategy is based on the FSIN Justice Secretariat’s
Coming Home Gathering held in March 2005 that brought together
First Nation Community Justice Committee members and Elders.
The objective of the Gathering was to engage justice personnel
in a community-driven process to identify the factors that
contribute to the cycle of recidivism and to develop a reintegration
strategy to break the cycle. This document is available from
the FSIN Justice Secretariat.
Objective
The objective
of the Corrections office is to analyse and develop policy in
the area of corrections and to integrate the corrections area
with all other aspects of justice; to coordinate corrections
strategies with First Nation and Government stakeholders; and
to evaluate the implementation of corrections strategies at
the community level.
Deliverables
The
Corrections Office will assist in developing First Nation policies
that define the role and responsibilities of communities in the
corrections and reintegration process. This work is completed
in collaboration with First Nations and Grand/Tribal Councils,
and with stakeholders of the Federal and Provincial governments.
