Saskatchewan Men's hockey team clinched first in their pool at the Aboriginal Hockey Championships in Ottawa, Ontario.
Saskatchewan Teams Off To Winning Start At Hockey Championships
Team Saskatchewan women’s hockey team won their first two games at the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships in Ottawa Ontario.
The women’s team pounded Alberta 9 to 3 this morning and hammered the NWT team 11 to 1 on Sunday.
Team Saskatchewan’s men’s team defeated Manitoba 7 to 4 yesterday. The men’s team takes to the ice later this morning against Nova Scotia.
FSIN Chief Lonechild Comments on $3.0 Million Federal Commitment to First Nations University
(Saskatoon SK): The announcement that the federal government has approved $3.0 Million in funding for First Nations University (FNUniv) represents yet another significant step forward.
“Minister Strahl’s announcement yesterday afternoon underscores the importance of First Nations University,” said Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) Chief Guy Lonechild. “We are very pleased to hear this news. FSIN is equally pleased that the significant improvements in governance, accountability and financial stewardship at First Nations University have been acknowledged. We are appreciative of Minister Strahl’s recognition of that significant progress.”

Citizenship Update:
First Nations have always had the inherent right to determine our citizenship. The right to determine ‘who belongs’ is at the heart of sovereignty. On behalf of the FSIN I had the opportunity to present at the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development (AANO) April 20, 2010 in Ottawa. The AANO was convened so that First Nations could provide their recommendations on the proposed amendments as part of INAC’s ‘exploratory process’.

I have been requested to address a number of comments made at the FNUC Board level regarding the manner in which my office has communicated with respect to recent developments at the First Nations University of Canada and our mutual efforts in this regard. Please find the following details surrounding my activities on behalf of the FNUC to date. I have also included a history of the events in the FSIN Legislative Assembly surrounding the formation of the FNUC Interim Board of Governors.

AFN National Chief to Make Presentation to United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues: Speaks to Growing Momentum to Endorse the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
(Ottawa, ON) – Assembly of First Nations National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo will make a presentation on April 22nd at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. The National Chief’s presentation will focus on key issues of importance to Indigenous peoples in Canada, within the context of advancing implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. New Zealand’s Minister of Maori Affairs announced at the opening of the Permanent Forum on April 19 that New Zealand is now supporting the UN Declaration.

First Nations University of Canada - Meeting with Stakeholders - February 16, 2010
Taking my direction from the Chiefs in Assembly, and with the directive from the FSIN Convention to promote the treaty position, I have always strongly asserted our sovereignty and autonomy to determine the best course of action with regards to promoting the treaty right to education. We continue to honour the legacy of our past leaders who established the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College, now the First Nations University of Canada.
Saskatchewan Ministry Of Environment Breaches FSIN Partnership Agreement
(Saskatoon, SK) Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) Vice Chief Lyle Whitefish is extremely disappointed with Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Environment’s (MOE) decision to terminate funding related to an FSIN-MOE Partnership Agreement entered into 16 years ago. The FSIN is calling on Environment Minister Nancy Heppner to restore funding to the FSIN to continue the Partnership Agreement.

FSIN Chief Lonechild on First Nations University Funding Update
(Saskatoon SK): Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) Chief Guy Lonechild today commented on process in which First Nations University is currently engaged - namely, accessing long term, sustainable funding.
“Given that FSIN is one of the stakeholders of First Nations University, we have a very strong interest in seeing continued progress in ensuring that long-term, sustainable funding for this important institution is in place as soon as possible,” said Chief Lonechild.
