FSIN Calls For Partnership To Develop Anti-Gang Solution Based Strategy
(Regina, SK) Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) Vice Chief Delbert Wapass says gang activity and violence must come to a halt. The FSIN has a policy document entitled "AlterNatives to Non Violence" that contains prevention and intervention strategies that involve Elders, culture camps, education and awareness. Vice Chief Wapass is calling for joint efforts from the Federal, Provincial, Municipal and First Nation governments to develop a comprehensive anti-gang solution based strategy.

FSIN Official Release Of The First Nations Duty To Consult And Accommodate Laws And Procedures
(Saskatoon, SK) Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) Vice Chief Lyle Whitefish is prepared to release the First Nations’ Duty to Consult and Accommodate Law and Procedure during the FSIN Chiefs-in-Assembly conference this week. The Law and Procedure establishes the parameters surrounding the Duty to Consult and Accommodate including the law, a model Band Council Resolution (BCR) for First Nations, a unified declaration, a certificate of authorization, a notice of non-compliance and the constitutional procedure on consultation and accommodation.
Chief Lonechild Optimistic About First Nations University Future
(Saskatoon, SK) FSIN Chief Guy Lonechild today welcomed the announcement by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada Minister Chuck Strahl that an additional $4 Million is being allocated to First Nations University.

New Proposed Safe Drinking Water Legislation Will Not Meet The Needs Of First Nations
(Saskatoon, SK) FSIN Vice Chief Lyle Whitefish says proposed new legislation for safe drinking water does not address the current lack of funding for First Nation drinking water infrastructure. In its current form Bill S-11 also places too much responsibility on First Nation Chiefs and Councils without providing adequate resources to meet the objectives of the proposed legislation.

Peaceful Rally Planned For Saskatchewan Legislature
(Saskatoon, SK) Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) and supporters are rallying together in response to the province’s unilateral decision to begin selling off Wildlife Habitat Protection Act (WHPA) lands by the end of the month.

Proposed Provincial Tobacco Legislation
The provincial budget was announced on March 24, 2010 and that budget includes items which directly affect the First Nation Treaty Right to be Tax Exempt. In particular the budget proposes reducing the quotas on the amount of tobacco purchased by First Nations citizens on reserve under their tax exempt status. Under current agreement appendices First Nations people are allowed to purchase three cartons of cigarettes per week without paying provincial sales tax.
The FSIN Applauds The Pehonan Hydroelectric Agreement
(Regina, SK) FSIN Chief Guy Lonechild congratulates the James Smith Cree Nation, Chakastaypasin Band of the Cree and the Peter Chapman Band – along with their development partners, Brookfield Renewable Power and Peter Kiewit Sons Co. – for reaching an agreement with SaskPower to study the feasibility of developing a hydroelectric project that would provide approximately 250 megawatts (MW) of power to the provincial electrical grid.

The Saskatchewan Government An Obstacle To First Nation Economic Independence
(Saskatoon, SK) Vice Chief Lyle Whitefish, of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN), and Chief Glen Pratt, of the George Gordon's First Nation (GGFN) are putting the provincial government on notice that issuing permits for exploration on First Nations traditional land will no longer be tolerated.
