National Aboriginal Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy (NAYSPS)
FSIN is in partnership with Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority (NITHA) and First Nation and Inuit Health (FNIH) on the National Aboriginal Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy. The goal of the NAYSPS is to develop a national approach to Aboriginal youth suicide prevention in Canada that will increase protective (preventative) factors such as resiliency and reduce the risk factors associated with suicide.
OBJECTIVES:
o increase awareness and understanding of Aboriginal youth suicide prevention;
o strengthen key protective factors such as a strong sense of identity, meaning and purpose, and resilience;
o strengthen and facilitate collaborative approaches and linkages with in and across governments, agencies and organizations;
o develop and implement locally-driven suicide prevention plans in First Nations and Inuit communities;
o improve and increase crisis response efforts to intervene more effectively in preventing suicide and suicide clusters following a suicide-related crisis in First Nations communities;
o enhance knowledge development regarding what is known about what works in preventing Aboriginal youth suicide; and
o gather First Nation youth to discuss, educate, ad raise awareness of suicide prevention and healthy lifestyles.
