Vice Chief Delbert Wapass

Delbert Wapass, 2nd Vice Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, has recently been elected to this position and has returned to the FSIN as an Executive Member, where he was formerly the 3rd Vice Chief, three years ago. He is also the former Chief of his Community, the Thunderchild First Nation. While Vice Chief Wapass was not involved in politics, he continued working with First Nation communities, Tribal Councils, educational institutions, crown corporations in Saskatchewan, oil and gas companies in the prairie provinces and with the Assembly of First Nations in British Columbia where he was part of a team that was mandated to revamp, negotiate and have complete jurisdictional control of health through the First Nations Health Council.

Vice Chief Delbert Wapass holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the First Nations University of Canada and a Bachelor of Education degree from the Indian Teacher Education Program at the University of Saskatchewan. He began working on his Masters in Education program while he was not involved in politics.

His strong Cree cultural and traditional background, along with his fluency in the Cree language, provides him with the balance and understanding to work with Elders and Chiefs, as well as the corporate partners, institutions, First Nations communities and government. He continues to firmly advocate that the Elders’ teachings and their vision are the foundations and principals that we, as First Nations people must follow. These traditional teachings also lay the foundations for the negotiations, understandings and laws that must be enacted so First Nations peoples are able to move collectively to an independent and sustainable future.
