Aboriginal Inland Habitat Program
The LRS and Fisheries and Oceans Canada formed a partnership in 2006, whereby the Secretariat works with First Nations to coordinate the Aboriginal Inland Habitat Program (AIHP).  ).  For more information click: AIHP (this is a clickable link).  Through AIHP, the Secretariat works with First Nations and Tribal Councils to develop plans to manage and protect fish habitat based on the First Nation Fish Habitat Stewardship Framework.  The Framework was developed through a series of First Nations community and Tribal Council discussions.  Key issues identified include: capacity building; fish habitat protection and research; and the use of Indigenous Knowledge Systems.  The Framework has been approved by the Lands and Resources Commission and work is well underway to engage communities in projects.  To date, these include partnering with the University of Saskatchewan in developing a pilot study researching fish parasites in Reindeer and Montreal Lakes; and the collection and study of Indigenous Knowledge in the Last Mountain Lake/Lanigan Creek region in order to restore adequate fish passage and reproduction in this lake.
