SFNVA Workplan

Each year, the SFNVA Executive develops a work plan and then forwards it to the SFNVA General Assembly for ratification. While there are on-going issues that the Executive addresses from year to year, such as redressing historical wrongs and fundraising, each spring the SFNVA membership is asked to approve a specific work plan that sets out the priority areas.

In the 2009-2010 fiscal year, the SFNVA work plan priorities were focused on improving governance, historical research and raising public awareness. Click here to see the 2009-2010 work plan.

In the research area, the SFNVA has completed an “Issues Paper” made up of historical research regarding First Nations Veterans’ loss of benefits. Click here to download the “Issues Paper.” This document has been forwarded to government officials across Canada.

A second major accomplishment in the historical research area is the “Issues and Solutions” presentation, which SFNVA Executive members, as well as the FSIN Veterans’ portfolio holder, use to present First Nations Veterans’ concerns to various levels of government. In the area of governance, the major recent accomplishments have been the development of SFNVA Election Regulations, that govern the leadership selection process, and Executive Regulations, that govern the conduct, roles and responsibilities of the elected Executive members.

Finally, this year’s work plan has contained a significant amount of work intended to raise public awareness of the First Nations contributions to Canada’s safety, as well as to their issues and concerns, through the development of an SFNVA Speakers’ Bureau. Work on the Bureau is underway, and we expect to launch our awareness materials in early 2010.
