Saskatchewan Indian Justice Council

The Saskatchewan Indian Justice Council is the senior technical working group of the Indian Justice Commission. It is comprised of senior level representatives from Tribal Councils and other First Nation communities that provide community-based justice initiatives in Saskatchewan.

The SIJC meets a minimum of six times a year to discuss capacity development for their respective territories, governance processes that would provide more efficient and effective second level service delivery, and training curriculum development.  The Council is evaluating its role and strategic direction as Tribal Council coordinating bodies.

Objectives

The Council collaborates as a regional planning group with the FSIN Justice Secretariat to deliver justice training and capacity development services to all communities.  The intent is to provide community based processes to advance First Nations governance in the area of justice.

The Indian Justice Council meets prior to each Indian Justice Commission meeting for the purpose of providing recommendations to the Commission on: justice related issues within their respective areas, capacity requirements, and future institutional development.  The Council also coordinates community justice consultations within their respective territories, liaises with the FSIN Justice Secretariat and advocates on behalf of their communities to provincial & federal governments, external organizations, agencies and identified personnel working within the justice field.
