(Saskatoon, SK) The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations supports accountability and transparency measures for all levels of government. First Nation Chiefs and Councils account for all monies received through their presentation of their audit to the Federal Government. The Federation is encouraged that Saskatchewan MPs are finally taking an interest in First Nation issues. It is hoped they will also assist in other important issues that First Nation people and communities continue to face on a daily basis including health, housing, education, safe drinking water and others. The FSIN has repeatedly called for the creation of a First Nation Auditor General's Office to account for Indian monies that flow through various levels of governments before reaching First Nation communities.
"The public should know how much money actually reaches the communities," says FSIN Vice Chief Morley Watson. "This type of accountability would help identify the gaps that need to be addressed. This is the kind of work a First Nation Auditor General's Office would conduct."
Saskatoon Rosetown Biggar Member of Parliament Kelly Block is credited with initiating the First Nations Financial Transparency Act by introducing a private members bill that's similar in nature.
The FSIN has sent an open invitation to Kelly Block and Saskatchewan's other Members of Parliament to attend the FSIN's Winter Legislative Assembly. It is hoped that Ms. Block attend and get first-hand knowledge of the challenges facing First Nation people.
The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. The Federation is committed to honouring the spirit and intent of Treaty, as well as the promotion, protection and implementation of the Treaty promises that were made more than a century ago.
