First Nations Want Clarification on INAC Name Change May 18, 2011

(Saskatoon, SK) The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Chief Guy Lonechild congratulates the Honourable John Duncan on his re-appointment to the Federal Cabinet as Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. Chief Lonechild looks forward to continuing their working relationship that has grown since Minister Duncan was named Indian Affairs Minister.

“I am happy that Minister Duncan will continue to work with First Nations as it will build consistency in our growing relationship,” says Chief Lonechild. “But I need clarification from Minister Duncan about the name change to the Federal Ministry. First Nations need assurances that Inherent and Treaty Rights continue to be protected. We must remind the Federal Government that our issues may be similar with other Indigenous groups but our Inherent and Treaty Rights is what makes us distinctive. ”

“The decision to change the name of the Indian and Northern Affairs Canada to Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development was made without consulting with First Nations in Saskatchewan,” says Chief Lonechild. “There are far more serious issues the Federal Government should be dealing with like providing flood relief, comparable funding to First Nation education, ensuring students have access to the internet, better schools, instead of focusing on name changes.”

The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. The Federation is committed to honouring the spirit and intent of Treaty, as well as the promotion, protection and implementation of the Treaty promises that were made more than a century ago.
