(Regina, SK) The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations in partnership with the City of Regina is bidding to host the 2014 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG). The NAIG Site Evaluation Committee arrived in Regina earlier this week and has visited various venues that include the Murray and Tor Hill Golf Courses; the Mount Pleasant Sport Park; Thom Collegiate and O’Neill High School.
“The North American Indigenous Games is a tremendous sporting event that provides an opportunity for Indigenous youth to compete and develop not only their athletic skills but generate long lasting friendships,” says FSIN Vice Chief Lyle Whitefish. “When the games were held in Cowichan, British Columbia in 2008 the community of Duncan benefited from a 35 million dollar economic impact.”
The international sporting event attracts close to 10,000 Indigenous athletes, coaches, parents and fans. Saskatchewan last hosted the games in 1993 in the city of Prince Albert. The cities of London, Ontario and Halifax, Nova Scotia are also submitting bids to host the 2014 sporting event. The successful bid will be announced in May.
“The Province of Saskatchewan and the City of Regina are well known for its capabilities to host successful world class sporting events in large thanks to the community’s volunteer spirit,” says Vice Chief Whitefish.
The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. The Federation is committed to honouring the spirit and intent of Treaty, as well as the promotion, protection and implementation of the Treaty promises that were made more than a century ago.
