FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 15, 2010
(Saskatoon, SK) The FSIN is saddened to announce the passing of First Nations World War II Veteran Howard Anderson of the George Gordon’s First Nation. He served for many years as the Saskatchewan First Nations Veteran’s Association Grand Chief. Howard Anderson passed away on Friday, November 12, 2010 in Regina, SK.
“It is with great sorrow that we hear of the passing of former Grand Chief Howard Anderson of the Saskatchewan First Nations Veteran’s Association,” says Chief Lonechild. “His accomplishments and contributions bettered the lives of First Nations people and all Canadians. His dedication to protecting our Treaty Rights and the many freedoms we enjoy today will be recognized by our people for years to come.”
Born in 1924, Howard Anderson joined the Canadian Forces at the age of 16 and served in World War II. He worked tirelessly to gain recognition for many First Nations who fought in the world wars. Anderson lobbied federal officials to obtain compensation for First Nations Veterans and their spouse. In 2000, as a result of his efforts, federal ministers agreed to establish a National Round Table on First Nations Veterans’ Issues. In June 2002, Anderson’s hard work and dedication paid off when the federal government finally offered some compensation—$20,000 for each eligible First Nations Veteran and their surviving spouse.
Anderson was passionate and dedicated to raising the profile of First Nations veterans. He played a major role in establishing the Veteran’s Memorial Teepee at the First Nations University of Canada. He believed younger generations needed to be more aware of the First Nations veterans and the sacrifices they made for Canada.
“The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, the Chiefs-in-Assembly and the organizations protecting our Inherent and Treaty Rights are much stronger thanks to the contributions of our Veterans,” said Chief Lonechild. “On Tuesday, November 16, 2010, we will celebrate Howard Anderson’s life, contributions and all that he fought for. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of our former Grand Chief.”
The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. The Federation is committed to honouring the spirit and intent of the Treaties, as well as the promotion, the protection and implementation of the Treaty promises that were made more than a century ago.
