(Saskatoon, SK) Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Vice Chief Dutch Lerat is proud to announce Bold Eagle Canadian Forces Training Program will take place from July 12 through to August 19 in Wainwright, Alberta. "There are 92 Aboriginal recruits from Western Canada attending Bold Eagle. Twenty six recruits are from Saskatchewan," says Vice Chief Lerat.
This successful youth development program is entering its 21st year. It began as a partnership between the FSIN and the Canadian Forces. Early on, the camp was co-ordinated out of the Canadian Forces Base in Dundurn, Saskatchewan. Bold Eagle now trains young First Nations Recruits at the Western Area Training Center in Wainwright, Alberta. This unique program involves First Nations cultural components mixed with Basic Military Qualification (BMQ) Training.
The Bold Eagle training is conducted by Canadian Forces personnel which includes; general military knowledge, weapons handling, navigation, first aid, drill, field craft and an intense focus on teamwork. The recruits earn approximately $4500.00 over the 6 week program for participating in the training. Resident Elders are available to the recruits for the duration of the summer.
Vice Chief Lerat states, "last year, 6 out of 10 recruits remained in the Canadian Forces (Regular or Reserves) and Bold Eagle is well on its way to continue this very successful trend."
As part of every Bold Eagle summer program, the recruits participate in a Grand Entry at a First Nations Pow Wow. This year, Bold Eagle is honoured to be attending Whitecap Dakota on Aug 12, 2010 at 1:00 pm.
Bold Eagle 21 will graduate on August 19, 2010 at 1:00 pm at the Canadian Forces Base Wainwright parade square.
