Thursday, 17 June 2010 16:56
(Saskatoon, SK) On behalf of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Vice Chief Delbert Wapass would like to congratulate the graduating class from the Indigenous Peacekeeping Training Pilot Project. Fifty-two women and men from 21 First Nations across the province successfully completed the training pilot. The graduation ceremony will take place Friday June 18, 2010 at 1 p.m. at the Waneskewin Heritage Park, 7 km north of Saskatoon.
“This peacekeeping training pilot is the first of its kind in Canada and is a ground breaking initiative,” says Vice Chief Wapass. “The newly graduated Peacekeepers have worked hard in helping to make history. They have demonstrated their commitment to safe, responsible community governance.”
Candidates from First Nation communities enrolled at four pilot sites across the province; North Battleford, Yorkton, La Ronge, and Prince Albert. The training included 18 correction and policing based courses provided by SIAST and 5 self governance and peacekeeping courses designed by First Nations University of Canada.
The aim of the pilot is to train peacekeepers on reserve to provide prevention and intervention services, respond to community and family crises, control crowd activity, secure investigation scenes and liaise with the RCMP. The partnership was established in response to identified public safety concerns from Saskatchewan First Nations communities.
The FSIN represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. The Federation is committed to honouring the spirit and intent of Treaty, as well as the promotion, protection and implementation of the Treaty promises that were made more than a century ago.
