Peaceful Rally Planned For Saskatchewan Legislature

(Saskatoon, SK) Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) and supporters are rallying together in response to the province’s unilateral decision to begin selling off Wildlife Habitat Protection Act (WHPA) lands by the end of the month.

“The province must be held accountable to First Nations” says Vice Chief Lyle Whitefish. “I am very concerned that the provincial government is willing to sacrifice the health and well-being of Saskatchewan’s wildlife and its ecosystems in the name of ‘economic growth’.” The WHPA land sales are made only available to current lessee holders. The general public and First Nations are ineligible to purchase these lands.

DATE: Tuesday May 18, 2010
TIME: 11 am to 1 pm
LOCATION: In front of the Saskatchewan Legislature Building

Regina, Saskatchewan

The FSIN will continue to support First Nations in Saskatchewan to ensure that the Government of Saskatchewan respects their legal and constitutional obligations as it relates to the duty to consult and Accommodate and that any proposed and/or legislative or policy changes on provincial environmental laws will be resisted until the province consults with and accommodates First Nations regarding their Inherent and Treaty rights.

The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. The Federation is committed to honouring the spirit and intent of the Treaties, as well as the promotion, protection and implementation of the Treaty promises that were made more than a century ago.
