The FSIN Host Annual Health And Wellness Gathering
Tuesday, 23 March 2010 00:00
(Saskatoon, SK) First Nations from across Saskatchewan will be attending a three day health and wellness gathering hosted by the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations that will focus on providing information on various health issues affecting First Nations people in Saskatchewan. The media are invited to attend The 2010 Working Together For Better Health & Wellness gathering on March 23 to 25 2010, at the Saskatoon Inn located at 2002 Airport Drive.
“The FSIN recognizes the health issues from diabetes, HIV, and suicide affecting First Nations people and their communities. This year’s gathering expresses the Federation’s commitment to assisting our communities in addressing these many issues that exist and making a positive difference in our communities,” says Vice Chief E. Dutch Lerat.
There are 43 seminars scheduled for the three day gathering. Discussion topics include the present healthcare system and the presentation of proactive solutions. The conference will also highlight some of the successful Aboriginal health and human resource initiative projects. As well, there will be discussions on the importance and significance of the Treaty Right To Health And Wellness.
“Our Elders remind us of a time when our people were healthy and all these negative health problems that plague our communities were non existent. It is the standard of living our leaders had in mind when they fought so hard to include the “Medicine Chest” in our Treaty with the Crown, says Vice Chief Lerat. “As we all know, the Crown is not open in the meaning of this interpretation and does not recognize Health as a right. However, oral history and Canadian common law support our beliefs.”
The FSIN represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. The Federation is committed to honouring the spirit and intent of the Treaties, as well as the promotion, protection and implementation of the Treaty promises that were made more than a century ago.
