The FSIN Chiefs In Assembly Dissolved The FNUC Board Of Governors

(Saskatoon, SK) The Chiefs in Assembly voted in favour of dissolving the Board of Governors for the First Nations University of Canada. An interim non-political Board of Governors made up of First Nations academic professionals will be put in place until March 1, 2010. The resolution further states to implement all of the recommendations contained in the All Chiefs Task Force on the Future of the First Nations University of Canada as may be subsequently informed by the Begay Report on Governance.

“The Chiefs of Saskatchewan did the right thing by supporting our students at the First Nations University of Canada. The Chiefs also want the Province to provide reciprocal accountability on the Federal transfer payments they receive for our students in the education system,” says FSIN Chief Guy Lonechild. “This is a milestone in the development of a renewed First Nations University of Canada. It is a step for true independence and I hope that it offers hope to our students.”

The resolution passed by the Chiefs in Assembly includes directing the interim Board of Directors to place the current senior administration of the FNUC on administrative leave pending the outcome of the Meyers Norris Penny audit.

The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. The Federation is committed to honouring the spirit and intent of Treaty, as well as the promotion, protection and implementation of the Treaty promises that were made more than a century ago.
