FSIN Chief Is Deeply Concerned For Students And Calls On FNUC Board Of Governors To Make The Right Decision
Monday, 25 January 2010 14:12
(Saskatoon, SK) FSIN Chief Guy Lonechild wants to assure students at the First Nations University of Canada that he will not support any action that does not enable First Nations students to complete their studies this year or complete their degrees in the future. Chief Lonechild is urging the FNUC Board of Governors to make the right decision and address the concerns raised by the students.
"I want to thank the students for sharing their concerns regarding the administrative affairs of the First Nations University of Canada. As the Chief of the FSIN, I agree fully with the need for "Indian control of Indian education"," says Chief Lonechild. "My primary concern and that of other stakeholders is to ensure that our students are not put at risk. They have worked too hard and offer so much hope for the future. We cannot fail them now.”
The FSIN will continue gathering information and once completed will work with the Board Governors and all stakeholders to ensure the long-term viability of this vital educational institution.
Chief Lonechild strongly recommends that the FNUC Board of Governors take all appropriate action in order to ensure that FNUC is accountable to First Nations in Saskatchewan.
Chief Lonechild will be available for comment later this week.
The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. The Federation is committed to honouring the spirit and intent of the Treaties, as well as the promotion, protection and implementation of the Treaty promises that were made more than a century ago.
