FSIN Looks Forward To A Meaningful Role In The Child Welfare Review
Monday, 09 November 2009 18:00
(Saskatoon, SK) FSIN Vice Chief E. Dutch Lerat applauds the announcement the Provincial Government will undertake a comprehensive review of the Child Welfare system in Saskatchewan. Consultations with key stakeholders such as First Nations will take place in the spring of 2010. The panel will provide non-binding recommendations in the fall of 2010 for the government's consideration.
“First Nations have always made children a priority, and their safety, protection, health and well-being are vitally important in creating better outcomes for First Nations families in Saskatchewan,” says Vice Chief Lerat. “First Nations need to be a part of this review in a meaningful way. We look forward to meeting with Minister Harpauer and her officials to continue discussions on this high-priority initiative.”
In June of 2009, Chiefs-in-Assembly passed a resolution calling for a First Nation led independent review of the over crowding of Saskatchewan foster homes. The Chiefs of Saskatchewan identified that there are short, interim and long term strategies needed to develop solutions to create a system that best serves the needs of First Nation children.
The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. The Federation is committed to honouring the spirit and intent of the Treaties, as well as the promotion, protection and implementation of the Treaty promises that were made more than a century ago.
