Early Learning and Child Care
Saskatchewan First Nations have been participating in the First Nations and Inuit Child Care Initiatives since 1995. There are currently 79 on-reserve day cares (center and home based) throughout Saskatchewan. Funding for the First Nations and Inuit Child care initiative are retained at the Saskatchewan Indian Training and Assessment Group (SITAG) who allocates funds to First Nations/Tribal Councils with the exception of the independent First Nations who are monitored by the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations.
The FSIN-Education and Training Secretariat is responsible to support the regional and national delivery of the First Nations/Inuit Child Care programs in Saskatchewan. FSIN –Education & Training continues to be committed to the monitoring of Independent childcare programs and ensuring quality programming for First Nations children. The manager is also responsible to ensure that appropriate program monitoring occurs where daycare operations exist with the Independent First Nations:

The manger coordinates and organizes regular FNICC working group meetings, and to support the work and strategies of the First Nations Early Childhood Circle. The First Nations Early Childhood Circle (FNECC) was established to provide leadership, input, technical support and guidance to the Saskatchewan Technical Advisory Group (STAG) and then to the Commissions on all issues related to early learning & child care and other related children’s issues. The reporting activities for FNECC are coordinated through the Directors of Education to the Saskatchewan Indian Education and Training Commission.
