The FSIN Looks Forward To Working With New Indian Affairs Minister

johnduncanFSIN Chief Guy Lonechild looks forward to meeting with newly appointed Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada the Honourable John Duncan.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper promoted Minister Duncan replacing the Honourable Chuck Strahl, who will assume the transport, infrastructure and communities ministry.

“First off I want to congratulate and thank Minister Strahl for the efforts he made to improve the lives of First Nation people. Especially his leadership during the First Nations University of Canada governance changes,” says Chief Lonechild. “This was a challenging time and Minister Strahl rose to the challenge.”

Mr. John Duncan was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 1993, and was re-elected in 1997, 2000 and 2004. After a narrow loss in the 2006 election, Mr. Duncan was returned to Parliament in October, 2008. He was then appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Indian and Northern Affairs.

“I look forward to working with Minister John Duncan,” says Chief Lonechild. “His knowledge of the Indian Affairs file should make for a smooth transition. I’m also encouraged by some of the comments he made regarding First Nation issues in the House of Commons.”

The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. The Federation is committed to honouring the spirit and intent of Treaty, as well as the promotion, protection and implementation of the Treaty promises that were made more than a century ago.
