The FSIN Is Calling For A Health Advocacy Office To Investigate Health Care Complaints
(Saskatoon, SK) FSIN Vice Chief E. Dutch Lerat is saddened by the recent report of the death of a 5-month old baby boy and extends condolences on behalf of the Federation to the child’s mother and family. Vice Chief Lerat says for the most part Saskatchewan’s Health care system provides adequate service but there are some instances where First Nations people fall between the cracks and denied the proper care they need.
"The Patient First Review report made several recommendations to improve the health of First Nations people. This includes assisting First Nations to navigate the health system and advocating for better care," says Vice Chief Lerat. "That’s why the Federation is calling for a First Nations office to investigate health care complaints. The recommendations from the Patients First Review report are not binding and have yet to be implemented. The Province has to act on this report."
The June 2009 FSIN Legislative Assembly authorized the FSIN to establish an Health Advocacy Office (HAO) where Vice Chief Lerat anticipates that the Office would build on the model and successes of the FSIN Special Investigations Unit that handles police complaints and general human rights grievances.
The creation of an FSIN Health Advocacy Office is to enhance patient-centred care at all levels of the system where assurances that complaints are responded to in a timely manner.
"The abnegation of health care service to First Nations people is a clear violation of our Treaty Right to health care and a direct violation to an individual’s human rights," says Vice Chief Lerat. "The Federation wants to work with the Province to ensure First Nations people receive proper care. An Advocacy Office will help identify the cracks in the system and find solutions to the problems and that both Federal and Provincial governments are committed to health care that puts patients and family first."
The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. The Federation is committed to honouring the spirit and intent of the Treaties, as well as the promotion, protection and implementation of the Treaty promises that were made more than a century ago.
