FSIN Executive Communique May 11, 2012

The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations acknowledges and accepts the appointment of George Lafond as Commissioner of the Office of the Treaty Commissioner for Saskatchewan.

Although the Saskatchewan First Nation leaders were not directly involved in the decision due to unforeseen circumstances throughout last year’s summer month, we are pleased that Parliament has appointed a First Nation person.  The Saskatchewan Leadership will take the opportunity to work with Mr. Lafond during his two (2) year appointment in strengthening the role of the Office of the Treaty Commissioner.  The OTC has the potential to become a stronger and more effective advocate for the Treaty First Nations within this province.

It is our hope that Canada and FSIN, through the Office of the Treaty Commissioner, can encourage Saskatchewan to become an active participant in achieving the First Nations’ perspective of treaty implementation.   We will encourage Mr. Lafond to work in collaboration to achieve this mandate

The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, through resolution by the Chiefs, has been mandated to review and revitalize the organization to achieve its original intent.  We hope the Office of the Treaty Commissioner will play an active role and work in partnership to achieve this mandate.
