The FSIN Senate was given the mandate by the Chiefs in Assembly to assist in the protection and implementation of Treaty. Since the 1970’s, the FSIN Senate has been active in participating in legislative and policy reform with respect to First Nation self-determination. With the amendments and revisions of the Senate Act passed at the 2003 Winter legislative assembly, this provides an exciting opportunity to begin implementing the new provisions of that act.

As Senators, we constitute more than a chamber of sober second thought. We have been appointed to represent our First Nation people and provide the necessary input into structures that differs from the input required by elected leaders. Our living understanding and respect for the relationship between our inherent rights, Treaties and First Nations people allows us to assert our knowledge and wisdom. We shall forever advocate the development of the First Nations Rule of Law.

The primary role of the Senate is to nurture the evolution of First Nations Governments by cogently and diligently advocating the development of the First Nations Rule of Law which expresses the entity, authority and jurisdiction of First Nations as one of the three Orders of Government within the Treaty territories of Saskatchewan and Canada.

It is encumbent upon the Senate and its members to realize and appreciate the benevolence of the Creator’s gifts and according to the beliefs and respect of our Elders, pass this knowledge on to the succeeding generations so that they too will have a living understanding and respect for the relationship between our inherent rights, Treaties and First Nations People.

The Senate will provide specific reports on matters that come within their purview with respect to any political matters relevant to First Nations. This will be done collaboratively with FSIN Executive and Chiefs of Saskatchewan. The Senate, through its membership, contains many years of experience and wisdom. With their diligence and ability to apply their knowledge and wisdom to issues before them, can assist greatly by offering useful insights into problems and suggesting creative ideas.
